Creating new types

How to create your own object types in Log+Key, such as vehicle key, radio or tool — with colour, icon and default type — and where types are used.

Every object in Log+Key has exactly one type – for example key, key bundle, vehicle key, radio or tool. Types keep lists tidy, and many settings can be limited to one type. You maintain your types yourself.

Types: Add, entering a name, choosing a colour and icon, saving; the new type appears in the list

Before you start

You need the permission Manage Types – admins and owners by default.

Steps

  1. Open Types in the web app and click Add.
  2. In the Add type form, enter the Name – the only mandatory field.
  3. Choose a Color in which the type is shown.
  4. Choose an Icon from the searchable list.
  5. Optional: switch on Default type if new objects should get this type preselected.
  6. Click Create.

Log+Key opens the new type’s detail page. From now on it is in the type list and can be chosen when creating and editing objects.

The default type

The type marked as Default type is preselected when a new object is created – also when an object is created from the first scan of a fresh NFC tag. Choose the kind of object you create most often as the default type.

Where types are used

  • Object list: filter by Type; colour and icon make the type recognisable in the list.
  • Stock: the type list counts Objects, In use, Available and Archived per type.
  • Inventory: an inventory can be limited to one type.
  • Return deadlines: rules for the Default return deadline in the settings can refer to a type – see Setting a return date.
  • Custom fields and comment templates: Log+Key can set up custom fields and comment templates for specific types – see Setting up custom fields for objects and Setting up comment templates.

Editing and deleting types

Clicking a type in the list opens its detail page with the stock figures and the Edit button; the form also holds Delete. Log+Key asks before deleting: the type is deleted permanently and removed from all objects that have it – those objects are left without a type. Better assign them another type first.

Tip

Keep the list short: one type per kind of object is enough. Details such as building or locking system belong in locations or custom fields.
