Adding links to objects

How to attach links to manuals, site plans or documents in your company drive to an object – they appear on its detail page and open in a new tab.

An object often comes with documents that live somewhere else: the operating manual for a tool, a site plan, an inspection record or the tenancy agreement in your company drive. Since Log+Key 2.5 you can attach as many links as you like to any object, each with its own name. They appear on the object’s detail page – anyone who opens the object is one click away from the documents.

Before you start

You manage links in the object form. For that you need the permission Manage Objects – admins and owners by default. There is no separate permission just for links.

Steps

  1. Open the object and click Edit.
  2. Scroll down below Photos to the Links block and click Add Link.
  3. In the dialog, enter a Link Name, for example “Operating manual”, and the URL – the address of the document or web page.
  4. Click Add Link. The link now appears as a row in the Links block. For each further link, repeat steps 2 to 4.
  5. Click Save at the bottom of the form.

Log+Key confirms with “Object edited” and shows the detail page with the new links. Only Save keeps the links: if you leave the form with Cancel, the links you just added are gone again.

Every link has a name and a URL.

You can also leave the Link Name empty – the detail page then shows the URL itself. A short name like “Site plan” reads better there. If the URL doesn’t start with https://, Log+Key adds it when you add the link.

You can also enter links right away when creating an object: the Create new object form has the same Links block.

In the form, every link is a row with its name and URL. Clicking the row opens the link in a new tab – handy for checking an address. On the right of each row there are two icons:

  • Pencil – opens the Edit Link dialog, where you change the name and URL; Save in the dialog applies the change to the list.
  • Bin – removes the link from the list without asking.
Pencil edits, bin removes – the form’s Save keeps the changes.

As when adding links: the changes only reach the object when you click Save at the bottom of the form.

On the detail page, the links have their own Links section below the object’s other details, in the order you added them. Clicking a link opens it in a new tab; the detail page stays open. This also works on a smartphone. If an object has no links, the section isn’t shown.

On the detail page, the links are one click away.

Everyone who opens the detail page sees the links – including people with the default role User, who don’t have the permission Manage Objects. They can’t change the links, though: the Edit button isn’t shown to them on the detail page.

At the terminal the links are available too: tapping an object in the overview opens its details, with the Links section at the end. After a scan, on the Take/Return screen, they don’t appear.

Links don’t show up anywhere else: the object list has no column for them, the search above the list doesn’t find link names, and the Take object dialog doesn’t show them.

In the history, every save of the form leaves an Object edited entry – even if only the links changed.

Tips

  • Log+Key only stores the link, not the file. Whether someone can open a document in your company drive depends on the sharing settings there – check them for everyone who works with the object.
  • Give every link a short, clear name such as “Site plan ground floor” or “Inspection record 2026” – the detail page only shows the name.
  • Links suit documents that already live somewhere else: maintenance and operating manuals, video tutorials, site plans, tenancy agreements or handover records. Short values such as contract or inventory numbers belong in custom fields instead – they appear as a column in the object list and the search finds them.
